Peintre français de natures mortes, de scènes de genre mais avant tout animalier, on le confond parfois avec son père, également peintre. Jules Gustave Leroy est réputé pour ses représentations de chats et de chatons, les capturant dans des poses franches tout en créant de la malice. On peut le rapprocher voire le confondre avec d’autres artistes du 19ème siècle comme Henriette Ronner-Knip, Julius Adams ou Eugène Louis Lambert.
