Sans titre, vers 1965

Compression de cables d’acier.
Dimensions : 36 x 21 x 8 cm

Provenance :

– Artist’s studio in « Vieux Nice »,
– Acquired in 1980 by Rico Zermeno, César close friend, directly from the artist’s studio,
– Private collection, acquired from above

César will undoubtedly remain linked to his « compressions ». It was while assembling deformed sheets in 1958 (Le Tiroir Bleu) that he discovered, at a scrap dealer where he used to get scrap metal to make his welded sculptures, an American press that compresses the carcasses of cars. He began by flattening a Dauphine car and from 1959, César centered his work on the technique of « directed compression » which became his trademark. He compresses various objects in the form of parallelepipeds, first small formats with copper tapes and sheets, then whole cars.

Certificate n° 2014-254 from the Henry Moore Foundation, included in the Catalog Raisonné under n° HMF 80-257A.

English artist. Henry Moore is best known for his semi-abstract monumental bronze sculptures which are located around the world as public works of art. As well as sculpture, Moore produced many drawings, including a series depicting Londoners sheltering from the Blitz during the Second World War, along with other graphic works on paper.

His forms are usually abstractions of the human figure, typically depicting mother-and-child or reclining figures. Moore’s works are usually suggestive of the female body, apart from a phase in the 1950s when he sculpted family groups. His forms are generally pierced or contain hollow spaces. Many interpreters liken the undulating form of his reclining figures to the landscape and hills of his Yorkshire birthplace.

Moore became well known through his carved marble and larger-scale abstract cast bronze sculptures, and was instrumental in introducing a particular form of modernism to the United Kingdom. His ability in later life to fulfil large-scale commissions made him exceptionally wealthy. Despite this, he lived frugally; most of the money he earned went towards endowing the Henry Moore Foundation, which continues to support education and promotion of the arts.

Provenance:

Towards the end of the 1940s Moore produced more and more sculpture by modelling, working the forms in clay or plaster before producing the final work in bronze by the lost wax technique. Apart from a few depictions of « family groups » in the 1950s, the subject is almost always a female figure. In addition, Moore’s sculptures are often pierced or contain cavities, excavations. In her residence at Much Hadham, Moore establishes a collection of natural objects, skeletons, driftwood, pebbles and shells, to create a source of inspiration for organic forms.

Many interpret the undulating form of these extended silhouettes as references to the landscapes and valleys of Yorkshire, the artist’s birthplace. When Moore’s niece asks him why his sculptures have such simple titles, he replies: “All art must have some mystery and must question the viewer. Giving a sculpture or a drawing an overly explicit title removes part of this mystery, and thus the spectator moves on to the next object, without making the effort to measure the meaning of what he has just seen. Everyone thinks they understand, but actually not really, you know. »

Plastic multiple 30 x 30 cm, Edition Achille Mauri.
Provenance: Private collection, Aix-en-Provence, South of France.

Sculptor and painter born in Argentina, he studied in Italy under the direction of Adolfo Wildt and presented his first exhibition in Milan in 1930. It was in Buenos Aires that in 1946, he worked out in the company of some young artists and intellectuals, the « White Manifesto » which will be considered the first manifesto of the « Spacialist Movement » and which will influence many abstract artists.

He begins by painting monochrome surfaces and “mistreating” them by making holes or incisions, sometimes inserting small shards of beads or small pebbles. For him, the canvas is no longer a support but an illusion that must open wide to the hazards of its non-pictorial environment. He attributes the title of Spatial Concept to this type of work also declined in sculptures. The works of this first Spaziale period, and particularly the first Ambiante Spaziale, are particularly rare today.

Francis Bacon was an Irish-born British figurative painter known for his raw, unsettling imagery. Focusing on the human form, his subjects included crucifixions, portraits of popes, self-portraits, and portraits of close friends, with abstracted figures sometimes isolated in geometrical structures. Rejecting various classifications of his work, Bacon said he strove to render « the brutality of fact. He built up a reputation as one of the giants of contemporary art with his unique style.

Bacon said that he saw images « in series », and his work, which numbers in the region of 590 extant paintings along with many others he destroyed, typically focused on a single subject for sustained periods, often in triptych or diptych formats. His output can be broadly described as sequences or variations on single motifs; including the 1930s Picasso-influenced bio-morphs and Furies, the 1940s male heads isolated in rooms or geometric structures, the 1950s « screaming popes, » the mid-to-late 1950s animals and lone figures, the early 1960s crucifixions, the mid-to-late 1960s portraits of friends, the 1970s self-portraits, and the cooler, more technical 1980s paintings.

Perseus liberating Andromeda, oil on copper mounted on panel 45,5 x 39 cm

We are very grateful to Diane De Grazia suggesting an attribution to Domenichino in a letter dated 12th June 2007 to the previous owner.

Born in Bologna, Domenico Zampieri, known by the diminutive Domenichino after his shortness, was an Italian Baroque painter of the Bolognese School of painters. Domenichino’s work, developed principally from Raphael’s and the Carracci’s examples, mirrors the theoretical ideas of his friend Giovanni Battista Agucchi, with whom the painter collaborated on a Treatise on Painting. The portrait of Agucchi in York used to be attributed to Domenichino, but is now thought to be by Annibale Carracci, another friend.

It represents what would become known as classic-idealist art, which aims to surpass the imperfections of nature by developing an « Idea of Beauty » (idea del bello) through the study and imitation of the best examples of ancient and Renaissance art. Imitation in this sense is not copying but a creative process inspired by rhetorical theory whereby revered models are not only emulated but surpassed.

Alfred Émile Léopold Stevens was a Belgian painter, known for his paintings of elegant modern women. After gaining attention early in his career with a social realist painting depicting the plight of poor vagrants, he achieved great critical and popular success with his scenes of upper-middle class Parisian life. In their realistic style and careful finish, his works reveal the influence of 17th-century Dutch genre painting.

Towards the end of the 16th century a revolution took place in music. Starting in Florence and Rome, a hitherto unknown way of making music was established, which gave priority to solo singing – accompanied by only one instrument – instead of the old complicated polyphony. The new fashion quickly found its way into the Roman aristocratic palaces, which became venues for celebrated performances. Marchese Vincenzo Giustiniani reports in his « Discorso sopra la musica, » written in 1628, that the two Neapolitan basses Giulio Cesare Brancaccio and Giovanni Andrea were the most acclaimed stars. Their special style of performance, probably understood as typically Neapolitan, was widely imitated.

This profound change in musical performance practice was also reflected in painting. Giustiniani was not only a passionate music lover. We also know him as an influential patron of Caravaggio. It is therefore not surprising that the new importance that music acquired in painting around 1600 ultimately emanated from pictorial creations that Caravaggio commissioned from his patron. With his Lute Player (Hermitage, St. Petersburg), Caravaggio introduced for the first time in the 1590s the type of half-figure musician painting that was so frequently varied by his successors and finally began its triumphal march across the Alps to become the most popular subject of Dutch painting par excellence in the 1620s and 1630s.

So far, only six paintings can be attributed to the Utrecht painter. However, his pictorial themes and painting style indicate that he was a student of Jan van Bijlert, and in any case that he loved music and the effective chiaroscuro of Caravaggism. In subject matter, style and composition, it has much in common with a painting by Jan van Bijlert of a Company of Musicians. The close resemblance suggests that Baeck may have been a pupil of Van Bijlert, who should be regarded as one of Utrecht’s major painters in the 1630s.

Harry Marinsky was born in London to Russian parents who worked in high fashion. The family moved to the United States when he was only three years old. He attended the Technical High School in Providence where first encountered sculptural art and learned how to cast in sand and plaster. A scholarship allowed the budding artist to attend the Rhode Island School of Design in his home town of Providence as well as the Pratt Institute in New York City. As a consequence of his training he was well versed in both fine art and commercial design.

His first public exhibition was at the Montrose Gallery in New York as part of the « 30 American Artists » group exhibition in 1940. First critical acclaim for Marinsky’s sculpture followed in 1945 for a group of seven figures titled « One War – One Peace ». The group depicts the horrors of war and what remained after its wake. Included in the group is Rape which shows a woman with a skeletal frame being raped while a thin child falls to the ground beneath her and her attacker.

In 1946 Marinsky left New York City for the rural town of Rowayton in Connecticut. The change in pace allowed him to pursue varied interests in landscape design, architecture, and gardening while still working as a painter and sculptor.

In 1969, Harry Marinsky was called by Richard Nixon to participate in the renovation of the Oval Office at the White House.

Portrait of a revolutionary, oil on unlined canvas 23,5 x 20 cm. In his original period frame. Signed on the lower left of the hand.

Swiss painter, Jean-François Sablet was born in Morges. He studied with his father, the painter and picture dealer Jacob Sablet (1720–1798), before moving to Paris in 1772. There, he and his younger brother Jacques-Henri Sablet (1749–1803) both studied at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture as pupils of Joseph-Marie Vien. Jean-François studied at the Académie in 1768–1773 and Jacques-Henri in 1772–1775. Although their careers did not follow a similar course, the attribution of their works has frequently been confused.

In 1791 Jean-François left Paris for Rome to join his brother Jacques-Henri. While there he concentrated on landscapes, also depicting people in local costume. In February 1793 Jean-François Sablet was obliged to leave Rome with the rest of the French community and by October was in Paris as a member of the Revolutionary Commune des Arts. He produced a number of Revolutionary portraits, including Joseph-Agricol Viala, William Tell and Lycurgus (all untraced), but spent most of his time quietly in Normandy.

In 1802 he worked in Paris for the printmakers Francesco Piranesi (1758-1810) and his brother Pietro Piranesi (1773-after 1807), the sons of Giovanni Battista Piranesi. In 1805 he established himself in Nantes, producing small-scale portraits of the city’s notables with sometimes scathing sincerity. In 1812 he decorated the Le Palais de la Bourse in Nantes, with six large grisailles depicting the Visit of Napoleon to Nantes in 1808.

French painter born in Argentan in the Orne, creator of tapestries and stained glass cartoons, also decorator, ceramist, sculptor and illustrator, Fernand Léger will be one of the first to publicly exhibit Cubist-oriented works, even if his style has sometimes been described as “tubist”.

The Yellow Flower which was painted around 1936, dates from the period from which Léger is recognized internationally. He exhibits both in Europe and in the United States where he goes several times. At that time, his pictorial research moved away from mechanical aesthetics to fall within the great pictorial tradition. His works then testify to a return to the figure and to the development of decorative research, in dialogue with architecture.

Note:
Opinion of Professor Roberto Longhi, Florence, September 22, 1965 contesting the first attribution to Franciabigio and attributing the painting to Alessandro Allori because of the similarities with his Master Bronzino.

Florentine mannerist painter, he is the father of Cristofano Allori. He was mastered by a family friend Angelo di Cosimo di Mariano known as Il Bronzino and then Michelangelo. In some respects, Allori is the last in a line of eminent Florentine painters: Andrea del Sarto collaborated with Fra Bartolomeo (as well as Leonardo da Vinci), Pontormo was briefly a pupil of Andrea and trained Bronzino who himself even trained Allori.

The following generations were strongly influenced by the Baroque wave which dominated in other parts of Italy. It was Alessandro Allori who finished Bronzino’s last fresco in the Church of San Lorenzo. Influenced by the sense of relief, the coldness of the enamel in the colors and the unnatural tone of the light, he works in the style of his master. Also influenced by Michelangelo for whom he will be in charge of the decorative trappings of his funeral, Allori painted around 1560 a « Last Judgment » for the altarpiece of the Church of Santissima Annunziata in Florence.

Resin skull with silver and red patina decorated with stuffed butterflies. One-off piece. Under translucent plexiglass placed on a large column.

Provenance: Private collection, Monte-Carlo.

Total dimensions with base: 196 x 50 x 40 cm

As a sculptor, Philippe Pasqua works as much on human skulls as those of hippos. Inspired by Damien Hirst with whom he exhibits, the theme of vanities, which he has been creating since 1987, so superficial in itself, then becomes a deep exploration. The final step he operates is the deployment of a cloud of stuffed butterflies. Wings spread, vibrant colors on the surface of its skulls, the light of the ephemeral magnifies the shadow of hollowed-out orbits.

29.  NICCOLO BERRETTONI (1637-1682)

La Visitation de la Vierge

Importante huile sur toile
Dimensions : 105 x 89 cm

Inscription on the back « Unique and original work certified by the painter », signed Samson Nolwen, dated March 12, 2016.

Provenance : Private collection, Beaulieu-sur-Mer, South of France.

Self-taught, Nolwenn Samson works with different materials, acrylic, ink, resin and marker. Naive, trashy, angry and above all very feminine, her artistic impulses are revealed and tested on large formats. It evokes Basquiat, Keith Haring, Warhol but also the best projections from street art or the cinematographic rhythms of Tarantino and Kitano, direct influences of the painter.

For a decade, she has been deploying her worlds on canvas: “I have long thought that painting came naturally to me, almost innately. Strange to be able to think that my subjects, my compositions and their plastic arrangements may not be directly influenced by an experience” confides the artist Nolwenn Samson.

Provenance:
Property of a distinguished noble family, bought from the artist, by descent to the previous owner until 1989. Catalogue eassay: probably commissioned by the Princes Solms-Braunfels directly from the artist. It certainly depicts one of the young princes. Solms-Braunfels was a high noble family existing in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Bohemia, which became extinct in the male line in 1989.

The Berlin-born Louis Ammy Blanc (1810-1885) was a successful portrait and genre painter in his time and is mainly known for his images of Biedermeier and the religious and romantic scenes from everyday life. Blanc started his artistic education at the end of the 1820s studying at the Berliner Akademie and some years later he changed to Düsseldorf and became a pupil of Julius Hübner. He stayed in Düsseldorf and ran a studio there.

The manner of painting of the artist is characterized by the technical perfection, the quality of distinction and detail of his depictions and the concinnity of his art. The simple and dignified portraits and the partially magical motives met the spirit of the 19th century – shaped by romanticism and Biedermeier.

Richard « Richie » Mirando, known as Seen is an American artist born in the Bronx. He is one of the best known graffiti artists in the world and has been referred to as the Godfather of Graffiti. Seen first started to paint on the New York City Subway system in 1973. His crew, United Artists, which included Duster, Sin, and his brother Mad, painted whole cars.

During the very early 1980s Seen started producing work on canvas, shown by galleries and bought by museums and private collectors worldwide. These included not only solo exhibitions but also group shows with artists Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Dondi, Quik, Blade, and Lee Quiñones. Despite such success and constant world travel, Seen continued to paint New York City subway trains until 1989, long after increased pressure from the MTA had stopped many from doing so.

In the late 1980s Seen also undertook tattoo art, opening Tattoo Seen, a tattoo parlor which became one of the most successful studios in New York City. Seen’s more recent work includes three-dimensional sculpture, mixed media work with reclaimed or discarded materials (often found in the street), and a series of hand-painted MTA New York subway maps. He continues to exhibit worldwide and produce work with and alongside artists such as Banksy.

Focused on painting comic book heroes, he has his own clothing line that prints t-shirts with his lettering and comic hero renderings.

Giuseppe Antonio Petrini was a painter of the late-Baroque, active mainly in Lugano, present-day Switzerland. While born in Carona in Canton Ticino and died in Lugano, both in Switzerland, Petrini belongs to the Northern Italian or Lombard heritage of baroque painting. He possibly apprenticed with Bartolomeo Guidobono after 1700. While some works can be found in Como and Bergamo, most are located in Lugano and the surrounding area. He is also listed between 1711 and 1753 as fabbriciere of the church of Madonna d’Onegro in Carona.

He often painted « portraits » of historical figures including saints, philosophers, and scientists for patrons. One of his more prominent examples is his depiction of an auster St. Peter emerging from the shadows to pinpoint some lines in the gospel. He painted another St. Peter for the parish church of Dubino. Pietro Ligari classified him among the speculative painters, since these portraits, by nature, were imagined.

The compression presented belongs to the Goggomobil series, a vehicle that looked like a gigantic shoebox on wheels. This is the Isar model that came off the line in November 1959 at Hans Glas, a German manufacturer, taking the name of a Bavarian river. And Caesar’s mind will make a prodigious compression of it.

Disciple and great friend of Derain who took him to an exhibition of Van Gogh which would mark a milestone in his career, he became directly attached to the Fauvist movement of which he would become one of the most brilliant representatives. He paints canvases using pure colors, simplifying the forms, placing his touches in flat areas or sometimes divisionist.

Although he experienced a brief cubist period, he returned after the war to realistic and then expressionist figuration where he represented still lifes and countryside landscapes in darker tones, creating strong impastos.

Note :

Executed between 1929 and 1935, this work is a lifetime cast. Cast by art foundry Hermann Noack, Berlin (no foundry mark)

Provenance:
– Possibly with Karl Nierendorf, New York in 1937;
– Where possibly bought by Margaret V. and Samuel A. Lewisohn, New York;
– Private Collection Monte-Carlo.

Notes:
This model was conceived in 1928 and cast in 13 examples in 1928/29. There was another lifetime cast in 1935 bringing the total to ca. 20 examples. The present example belongs to one of the first two casts made by the art foundry Hermann Noack, Berlin. Like many bronzes by Georg Kolbe without plinth, the present bronze does not have a stamp by the foundry.

In 1951 the present bronze has been exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in an important show dedicated to The Lewisohn Collection. Until its sale in November 2019 the bronze was kept in that private collection.

German expressionist painter born in Bavaria, he is one of the founders of the association « Die Brüke ». Ernst Kirchner studied architecture at the Technical University of Dresden where he met Fritz Bleyl, then Erich Heckel and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. The four of them founded the group Die Brücke (The Bridge) in 1905, whose program was drawn up in 1906 and exhibitions of paintings and engravings took place from that date. These artists do not claim any influence, even if Kirchner discovers the concept of « rapid drawing » in other contemporary painters and refers to the German Middle Ages, the drawings of Rembrandt and Japanese Art.

Due to health problems, lung disease and depression, aggravated by the consumption of alcohol and narcotics, Kirchner made several stays in a sanatorium, some of the walls of which he decorated (Königstein im Taunus in Hesse). In 1916, he was the victim of a car accident and he moved to Davos to paint many landscapes there.

In 1937, the Nazis declared his art degenerate and many of his paintings were destroyed.

Italian painter and sculptor born in Castellamare di Stabia, Ettore Tito is attached to the Venetian School. After completing studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, he revealed himself in 1887 with the painting « Pescheria Roma ». His field of inspiration is vast, as marine compositions, landscapes, mythological and religious subjects inspired by Venetian painting of the Settecento.

If we owe him the frescoes in the central hall of the Villa Berlingieri in Rome, his talent is particularly noticeable in the realism of Venetian popular life. Ettore Tito will also be a sculptor of classical inspiration.

Virgin and Child with Saint John and Saint Anne, oil on copper 44,7 x 44,7 cm, signed lower right.

Provenance: Private collection, Ghent Belgium

Antwerp painter of still lifes and garlands, from the famous Brueghel dynasty, he was initiated with his father, Jan Brueghel the Younger before continuing his training in Liège in the studio of Walther Damery and in Italy with his younger brother Abraham. It was in Venice that he painted a garland of flowers with the return of the Prodigal Son in collaboration with Erasmus Quellinus.

Jan Pieter’s style is heavily influenced by that of his grandfather, Jan Brueghel the Elder and Jan de Heem with bouquets often made up of flowers that bloom in different seasons. For the creation of his garlands, he regularly collaborates with painters of figures in the manner of Hendrick van Balen, Frans Francken the Younger, Rubens or Daniel Seghers.

This genre is inspired by the cult of veneration and adoration of the Virgin which prevailed at the Court of the Habsburgs before the cartouche scenes were later replaced by profane scenes. Erasmus Quellinus is one of his most frequent collaborators for the representation of figures

Virgin and Child and Saint John the Baptist, circa 1530
Oil on panel 67 x 55 cm, antwerp school around 1930.
Provenance: Private collection, Ghent Belgium

The Virgin with the oval face is seated with Jesus standing by her side, playing with Saint John the Baptist. A pearl tiara down to the forehead, she is richly dressed as the Master liked to represent her, referring to the aristocrats of the Court of Austria-Hungary.

We discover in the foreground a bouquet of flowers, fruit, a book and a small sheep on an entablature and in the background, seven different scenes with figures.

Painter of religious figures and compositions, this Antwerp master during the first half of the 16th century and who remained anonymous for a long time, was thus designated by M. J. Friedländer because of the parrot which, without having signature value, appears on some of his paintings of Madonna. and with which the Child plays. In 2017, he will be identified as Cornelis Bazelaere, mentioned in the Guild of Antwerp in 1523.

His representations of the Virgin and Child and of Saint Magdalene, depicted in the guise of young aristocrats, dressed in the fashion of around 1530, bring him mainly closer to his contemporary, the Master of Half-Figures, with whose highly style mannerism and mode of production are sometimes confused, and more rarely the figures of Pieter Coeck d’Alost, both being followers of Joos van Clève.

The type of the Virgin, the oval of her face, the expression of her features, the slender fingers as well as the elongated body of the Child are common to the two artists who never ceased to pay a disguised homage to the ideal and sensitive grace of the noble women of the court of Margaret of Austria and Mary of Hungary.

In his works we find inspirations from Pop art, Italian futurism, Mayakovsky, but also Jimi Hendrix and Hollywood icons. Messac, humorously plays with the image of the original couple. The weak woman and the impressionable man of the Bible here have the features and postures of couples of flamboyant stars, often with a tragic destiny.

Jésus avec Saint-Joseph

Huile sur toile attribuée à Angelo Caroselli.

The Child with Saint Joseph, oil on unlined canvas 64,5 x 49 cm.

Angelo Caroselli or Carosèlli was an Italian painter of the Baroque period, active mainly in his native Rome. He created religious works, allegories, portraits as well as genre scenes in the vein of the Caravaggisti. He also returned regularly to scenes of witchcraft and sorcery.

His style is eclectic style and shows influences principally from Caravaggio and the painters of ‘low-life’ scenes active in Rome called the Bamboccianti. His work is characterised by its search for originality. This is demonstrated in the potent naturalism and chiaroscuro that characterise his compositions and his preference for depicting colorful characters of contemporary Rome and scenes of witchcraft and musicians.

The work of Caroselli was influential on other Caravaggisti such as the Lucchese painter Pietro Paolini and the Dutch painter Dirck van Baburen.

68.  HENRY SCHEFFER (1798-1862)

Maria Bronislavovna Vorobyeva-Stebelska also known as « Marie Vorobieff » or Marevna, was a 20th-century Russian-born painter known for her work with Cubism and pointillism. She is internationally known for convincingly combining elements of cubism (called by her « Dimensionalism ») with pointillism and – through the use of the Golden Ratio for laying out paintings – structure. She has been accredited with being the first female cubist painter.

Though she lived the greater part of her life abroad – her formative years as a cubist painter in France and her mature years in England – she is often referred to as a « Russian painter ». From her relationship with the Mexican cubist painter and later muralist Diego Rivera in Paris she had a daughter, Marika Rivera (1919-2010), who became a professional dancer and film actress.

Born in a small village near the Sarthe, Henri Lebasque enrolled as a student at his local art school, the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, in Angers. In 1886, he went to Paris and briefly studied under Bonnat. He later studied under Humbert and aided in his decorations of the Panthéon.

Lebasque made his début at the Salon des Indépendants in 1896 and also participated in the Salon des Artistes Français. In his youth, he frequently visited the aging Pissarro, who lived near Paris, and in his studio, he learned crucial lessons about line, form and color. Undoubtedly the influence of Pissarro upon Lebasque was far greater than that of Bonnat.

As the era of the first great Impressionists moved toward its close with Pissarro’s death in 1903, another era in French art began, with Lebasque participating in the inaugural exhibition at the Salon d’Automne, on whose committee he gave lifelong service. He was at one time wrongly classified with the Fauves, doubtless a result of his exhibiting alongside them in the Salon d’Automne during the exciting and innovative first few years of the 20th century. At the Salon des Indépendants in 1893, he met Luce and Signac for the first time and under their influence adopted the Pointillist technique for some years.

By 1900, Lebasque was married. He settled with his family in Lagny to the east of Paris until 1906, mostly painting scenes along the wooded banks of the Marne. At about that time, he was introduced to the Midi by his friend Albert Manguin and the region wrought a dramatic transformation on his painting, from which he never turned back. He also spent much time painting in other far-flung regions of the land, in Vendée, Brittany, Normandy, Sanary (near Toulon) and Nice. For periods in 1912, 1915 and 1921 he lived in Les Andelys, on the Seine to the west of Paris and used the backdrop of steep chalky cliffs against the leafy river to great effect in his paintings. For more than thirty years he used members of his own family as models in his paintings and the artifacts, interiors, houses, gardens, riverbanks and beaches in his pictures were drawn from places where he stayed for long periods. After spending a few seasons in Saint-Tropez and Saint-Maxime, he finally decided on Le Cannet, and made his permanent home there in 1924.

Art critics and artists describe Henri Lebasque as “painter of joy and light”. The pleasant subjects that he likes and the obvious joy that transpires in his way of treating shapes and colors earn him esteem and admiration.

Confirmation of authenticity from Yann Farinaux-le-Sidaner, Paris, dated 18 April 2013 (Nr. LS 459);

According to a kind note from Yann Farinaux-Le-Sidaner the eponymous painting which is presented in the catalogue raisonné (no. 646) is identical with the present work (In Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum Madrid). It was reworked by the artist – as he quite often did – and then signed at the lower right, in contrast to the first version, which was signed at the bottom left. A black and white photograph documenting the prior state of the painting was published in the catalogue raisonné. It came from the Galerie Georges Petit, where the artist was under contract during his lifetime. There are two smaller preparatory studies of the motif in oil (Farinaux-Le-Sidaner 1207, 24 x 16 cm, and 1209, 40.7 x 25.4 cm).

Le Sidaner’s career is usually divided into an initial realist period lasting until 1893, followed by a phase linked to Symbolism (1894-1899) and an intimist period in the first years of the 20th century, up until the Great War. In the decade after the conflict, the painter created the most brilliant part of his mature oeuvre.

Throughout the 1920s, Le Sidaner depicted the poetic suggestions of the most varied corners of France; from his own garden in Gerberoy to the park in Versailles, from the scenery of Brittany to that of the south of France. The master of suffused colours was moving away from the hazy and diffused glow which had characterised the largest part of his works. Gradually, in his paintings light became less indeterminate, and the range of colours became brighter, more intense.

We report a view of the port of Antibes painted by the artist and sold in London at Bonhams auctioneer for the price of 72,000 pounds.

Thanos Tsingos was born in 1914 in Elefsina. He studied architecture at the National Technical University of Athens (1931-1936) and worked as an architect until 1939. His intense and adventurous life begins with the Second World War; he served in the Middle East front, got involved in the Middle East coup and was sentenced to death at first, then to life imprisonment, etc. Once he was pardoned and released (1946) he became one of the architects working on the city plan of Brasília, on Le Corbusier’s recommendation.

After the end of the Brazilian project (1948), he settled in Paris, where he initially worked with the avant-garde theatre and eventualy he devoted himself to painting. He had already adopted the wild lifestyle of the bohemian artists of the era, which favoured bouts of creativity, but also self-destructive tendencies.

His painting style, in history of art terms, belongs to the European trend of informal. His gestural writing and the rich colour texture create surfaces full of emotional tension. Nevertheless, his works are rarely entirely abstract. Usually there are figurative subjects (landscapes, animals or flowers), which are depicted in an abstract manner, as images of a fantasy world.
